THE IMAGE IS JUST THE START

A city map. Then your own story.

Let AI illustrate the setting. Keep the names, grid and finishing touches in your hands.

Describe the terrain and landmarks, then choose parchment, watercolor, ink or painted art. Prompts request no lettering, so you can name places yourself instead of fixing AI text.

The image shown is a prepared ChatGPT sample, not a live generation.

Streets with stories

Give each district a reason to exist.

Describe how your city lives: a trading port, a river crossing or a fortress town. AI sketches the overall layout; use labels to identify districts and check that roads and bridges connect.

  1. Start with a river crossing, harbor or hilltop fortress. This anchor should determine where the city grows.
  2. Describe distinct districts: docks beside water, a market on a main road and workshops outside crowded residential streets.
  3. Trace the gates, roads and bridges after generation. Label districts in the editor; the picture does not guarantee a navigable street network.

Try this prompt: A walled river city with a bustling market, red rooftops, two stone bridges and an old castle on a hill. No text or labels.

A MAP WITH A PURPOSE

Put this setting to work.

Choose the view that helps you plan, write or play.

01

Urban adventures

Mark the market ward, docks and citadel so players can choose where to go next. Keep secret locations on a separate annotated copy.

02

A setting for your cast

Locate neighborhoods, meeting places and river crossings for a story. Check connections yourself; the image is not a street-routing model.

FROM YOUR SCREEN TO YOUR STORY

Take the map with you.

A downloadable image, not a locked-in project format.

Keep the original

Download the clean image before adding annotations. Export a separate PNG from the editor for each version you want to share.

Use it in your VTT

Import a PNG as an image in Roll20 or Foundry. Choose grid dimensions and pixels per cell in the editor, or export without a grid.

No scene files, walls, lighting or automatic grid alignment.

Prepare a handout

Set your output dimensions, then place the PNG in your layout or print workflow. Check the result at its intended size before printing.

Larger canvas dimensions do not add detail to the source image.

YOUR FREE MAP WORKBENCH

Your map. Your names. Your rules.

Upload a map or use a sample above. Editing stays in your browser and needs no account.

Images keep their aspect ratio. Any unused canvas area is padded with parchment; the preview and PNG use the same renderer.

ROOM FOR YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A few things to know.

How is a city map different from a town map?

A city needs multiple districts and a larger street network. For a small settlement centered on one inn, bridge or market, start with the town generator instead.

Can I move individual buildings after generation?

The result is a flat image, not separate building objects. The browser editor adds names and overlays; changing the street layout requires a new generation or an external image editor.

Is the fantasy map generator free?

Grid overlays, labels, compass marks and PNG export are free and run in your browser. AI generation uses credits; monthly plans have a fixed allowance, not unlimited generation.

Why are there no place names in generated maps?

AI lettering can be unreliable. Prompts explicitly request no text. Add your own readable names in the free browser editor instead.

THE NEXT CHAPTER IS YOURS

Give your city a story.

Start with a description, or bring a map you already have. The browser editor is free either way.
