THE IMAGE IS JUST THE START

A castle map. Then your own story.

Let AI illustrate the setting. Keep the names, grid and finishing touches in your hands.

Describe the terrain and landmarks, then choose parchment, watercolor, ink or painted art. Prompts request no lettering, so you can name places yourself instead of fixing AI text.

The image shown is a prepared ChatGPT sample, not a live generation.

Strongholds & secrets

Let the terrain shape the stronghold.

Choose a landscape and a defensive purpose. A cliffside keep needs a different approach than a river fortress. These are location illustrations, not dimensionally accurate floor plans.

  1. Choose the defensive site: a cliff, river island or mountain ridge. Describe the approach before the towers.
  2. Specify the exterior spaces that matter: a gatehouse, outer courtyard, inner keep and gardens. Keep rooms and interiors for a separate planning process.
  3. Inspect access from the road through the gates. Add courtyard and tower names afterward; do not infer room dimensions from painted rooftops.

Try this prompt: A cliffside stone castle with two courtyards, a narrow bridge, terraced gardens and a village at its gate. No text or labels.

A MAP WITH A PURPOSE

Put this setting to work.

Choose the view that helps you plan, write or play.

01

The approach to a fortress

Show the bridge, gates and outer grounds as the party arrives. Plan any tactical encounter on a separate, measured battle map.

02

A seat of power in your story

Use courtyards, walls and gardens to establish a stronghold’s character. This exterior view does not define rooms, stairs or interior dimensions.

FROM YOUR SCREEN TO YOUR STORY

Take the map with you.

A downloadable image, not a locked-in project format.

Keep the original

Download the clean image before adding annotations. Export a separate PNG from the editor for each version you want to share.

Use it in your VTT

Import a PNG as an image in Roll20 or Foundry. Choose grid dimensions and pixels per cell in the editor, or export without a grid.

No scene files, walls, lighting or automatic grid alignment.

Prepare a handout

Set your output dimensions, then place the PNG in your layout or print workflow. Check the result at its intended size before printing.

Larger canvas dimensions do not add detail to the source image.

YOUR FREE MAP WORKBENCH

Your map. Your names. Your rules.

Upload a map or use a sample above. Editing stays in your browser and needs no account.

Images keep their aspect ratio. Any unused canvas area is padded with parchment; the preview and PNG use the same renderer.

BEFORE YOU SET OFF

A few things to know.

Does this generate castle floor plans?

No. It creates exterior castle and grounds illustrations. Rooms, stairs, wall thickness and floor-to-floor alignment are not provided as an accurate plan.

Can I create a ruined fortress instead?

Describe collapsed walls, an overgrown courtyard and a broken approach road. Review the image for usable entrances rather than assuming every drawn passage connects.

Is the fantasy map generator free?

Grid overlays, labels, compass marks and PNG export are free and run in your browser. AI generation uses credits; monthly plans have a fixed allowance, not unlimited generation.

Why are there no place names in generated maps?

AI lettering can be unreliable. Prompts explicitly request no text. Add your own readable names in the free browser editor instead.
